DISCOVERING THE WATERWAYS OF TANTRAMAR

Canoeing Lakes and Rivers

Tidal River Route — Gaspereau River

This waterway is well protected by high riverbanks capped by boreal forest. A gentle current makes it a good route for novice paddlers. Beyond tidehead, the river narrows and water depth falls. The Gaspereau turns into a wilderness river. During spring run-off, this section can be traversed only by canoe.

Launch from the Centennial Park riverbank (Shemogue Rd.), or at the Port Elgin Wharf. Collins Lake, just off Highway 15 near Shemogue, provides access during spring run.

Flat Water Canoeing — Sackville area

The area surrounding Sackville and near the Tantramar Marsh provides opportunities for several different kinds of canoe excursions.

Morice Pond (also known as Silver Lake), situated on Rte. 940 in Middle Sackville, is a recreational boating area which can be used by novice paddlers. Canoes can be launched at Lillas Fawcett Park.

For more information on Morice Pond boating, contact the Sackville Visitor Information Centre at 364-4967.

Jolicure Lakes, located within Tintamarre National Wildlife Area, offer a wilderness caneoing experience within close proximity to the Town of Sackville. Deer, moose, beaver, muskrat, coyotes, grouse, songbirds and a variety of waterfowl are common in the area. Boats using the lakes are restricted to outboard engines of less than 10HP. The watercourse can be accessed by taking Parson's Rd. from Jolicure Corner.

For more information on the Tintamarre National Wildlife Area, contact the Canadian Wildlife Service in Sackville 364-5044.
